#241 | Reviews and Other Rambles: Sunflo’er, The Callous Daoboys, Pilori, Dale Kerrigan, and More

What’s up, vacuum vagabonds! We hope all is well in your respective corners of the world. As is tradition, we have a heaping bundle of new(-ish) music to sputter on about. A good deal of the albums and EPs contained herein date back to August and September 2022, but we hope there might be an intriguing release or two you might have missed upon initial release.

Gurgling cosmic death metal, Tolkienian cozy synth, balmy mathcore, rancid goregrind, and belligerent hardcore punk comprise a handful of the frequencies unearthed in this episode. Down below you will find the full catalog of the material we discuss, with timestamps provided for each piece of music (in case you want to jump to a particular segment of the conversation).

If you have some artists, albums, singles, or any other form of musical media you’d like us to consider covering for an upcoming episode, please feel free to send us an email or reach out at one of our various social media channels. Thank you all so much for your continued support!

Segment 01: Band Developments

Brief rambles about upcoming music

Milim Kashot, Vol. 4, the latest compilation from Israel’s metal outlet Machine Music, was released on September 9, 2022. It features 29 tracks with exclusive cuts from artists like Spider God, Baazlvaat, Trǫlláss, Theophonos (formerly of Serpent Column), among a slew of others.

REZN, Chicago’s psych-doom quartet, announced their upcoming fourth LP, Solace, will release on March 8, 2023. We highly recommend checking their 2020 album, Chaotic Divine.

Cello recording wrapped for the upcoming Osi and The Jupiter record. No release date has been made publicly known yet. Also, Mike Sanchez (Acid Bath, Agents of Oblivion) joined the group as lead guitarist and co-songwriter. (You can peruse Osi’s discography on their Bandcamp page).

The sixth studio record from prog-/psych-rockers Elder, Innate Passage, will release on November 25, 2022.

We also briefly ramble about the sophomore record, New Lords, from the Poughkeepsie-based hardcore punk quartet Mindforce.

Segment 02: New(-ish) Tracks

Rambles about relatively fresh tracks
Chrome Ghost – “The Furnace” (00:15:29)

A monstrous single from Sacramento’s melodic doom crushers, Chrome Ghost. This comes off their third full-length record, House of Falling Ash. The full record was released on October 28, 2022.

Wipes – “Summer” (00:18:37)

A single released in anticipation of Wipes’ debut record, Making Friends. Noise rock from Pennsylvania with a weirdly nostalgic indie slant. Making Friends was released via Portland’s Hex Records on November 4, 2022.

Adzes – “Engraver” (00:22:01)

The lead single from Adzes’ side of their split with San Diego’s Putrescine. Atmospheric sludge and post-metal coalesce into a leaden tonic. The full split was officially (and independently) released on September 23, 2022.

Universally Estranged – “Corrupted Mind Palace” (00:26:37)

The first single from the Houston cosmic death metal project’s second album, Dimension of Deviant Clusters. Their debut album, Reared Up in Spectral Predation, was released in April 2021 via Blood Harvest Records. Dimension of Deviant Clusters was officially released via Blood Harvest on October 28, 2022.

Dream Unending – “Secret Grief” (00:29:23)

The lead single from the dream-doom duo’s sophomore album, Songs of Salvation. Their debut record, Tides Turn Eternal, was released back in November 2021. Songs of Salvation will fully release on November 11, 2022, via 20 Buck Spin.

Segment 03: EPs, Splits, and/or Demos

Rambles about some newer bite-sized releases

Dregahir – The Crebain (00:33:09)

The debut release from Paris’ Tolkienan dungeon/cozy synth project, Dregahir. Lush and wistful timbres weave a tale of Dregahir’s adventures far afield from the doldrums of Orthanc. Released August 19, 2022.

Heksebrann – Transcendence (00:39:34)

Four fresh tunes from Germany’s fuzz-drenched heavy metal trio known as Heksebrann. Bluesy guitar leads and brooding guitar atmosphere billows a la post-metal. Transcendence was independently released on September 2, 2022.

Segment 04: Weird Bandcamp Picks

Random, and usually strange, finds from our Bandcamp dredging

KFC Murder Chicks – KFCMC (00:44:07)

The latest release from Kentucky’s hypergrunge duo, DJ Rozwell and Ash Vestal. A nanners collection of tunes that harbor smatterings of cybergrind, hip-hop, noise rock, and electronic. KFCMC was independently released on September 9, 2022.

The Bug – Absent Riddim (00:49:34)

The same beat, with light (yet grotty) modifications, for seventeen tracks. The twist? Each cut features a different vocalist. Ethan McCarthy (Primitive Man) and Justin Broadrick (GODFLESH) make appearances alongside a slew of other musicians we know jack shit about. Absent Riddim was independently released on September 2, 2022.

Lymphatic Phlegm – Vulgar Tissue Excavators and Morbid Organ Plastinators (Practitioners of Purulent Excisions) (00:53:44)

If the length of the EP title is any indication, this is some miasmatic goregrind from Brazil’s Lymphatic Phlegm (est. 1996). Vulgar Tissue Excavators was released by P2 on September 11, 2022.

Segment 05: Forgotten Recents

Records we've been digging, but don't have the time for a deep dive
God Mother – Obeveklig (00:58:24)

The return of Stockholm’s belligerent hardcore punk stalwarts, God Mother. Their last chunk of material released back in 2017 with their LP Vilseledd. Obeveklig was released on May 6, 2022.

Зло – Зачеркни моё имя (01:03:44)

Pummeling and chunky beatdown hardcore from St. Petersburg’s Зло (roughly translates to Evil or Malice). This one is as electrifying as it is bludgeoning. Зачеркни моё имя (Cross Out My Name) was officially released back on December 1, 2021.

Segment 06: Albums of Focus

Records we dive into with some depth (in order of episode appearance)

Sunflo'er - All These Darlings and Now Me

Timestamp in episode: 01:09:14

The third full-length album from Potsdam’s mathcore quartet, Sunflo’er. Balmy rock and roll rhythms melt amidst hues of post-hardcore and angular mathcore to create a stunning soundtrack for those long summer nights. All These Darlings and Now Me was released by Dark Trail Records on September 2, 2022.

The Callous Daoboys - Celebrity Therapist

Timestamp in episode: 01:17:20

The sophomore album from the mathcore septet known as The Callous Daoboys. It’s replete with bonkers tonal variety that cannot be aptly summarized here; embrace the entropy. Celebrity Therapist was released via MNRK Heavy on September 2, 2022.

Pilori - Quand Bien Même L'Enfer et le Déluge S'abattraient sur Nous

Timestamp in episode: 01:28:58

The sophomore record from France’s blackened crust quartet, Pilori. Repugnant, grisly thrums from a smoldering abyss. Quand Bien Même L’Enfer et le Déluge S’abattraient sur Nous was released via Total Dissonance Worship on August 26, 2022.

Dale Kerrigan - the water

Timestamp in episode: 01:35:50

Album number two from New Zealand’s alternative noise rock quartet, Dale Kerrigan. Chilled yet harsh. Dreamy, but also tempestuous. The Water was released via Trace/Untrace Records on August 31, 2022.
