Howdy, huffers of space dust! We hope you’re keeping well. We’re back yet again with a big ol’ crate of noise to incoherently ramble about. As is typical, much of the material covered here dates a few months back into 2022, but we hope our delayed coverage might unearth an interesting find or two that you might have overlooked.
In this one, we babble about releases from Chat Pile, Low Cunning, Crowning, and a litany of other bands. Slicing emoviolence, cathartic avant-garde black metal, funky electronic, and cacophonous deathgrind are but a few timbres explored. Below you will find the full list of what we cover throughout the episode’s duration. Timestamps are provided for each single, EP, album, or split, in case you want to jump to any particular segment of the conversation.
If you have some artists, albums, singles, or any other form of musical media you’d like us to consider for an upcoming episode, please feel free to send us an email or reach out at one of our various social media channels. Thank you all so much for your continued support!
Segment 01: Band Developments
The Callous Daoboys will be releasing their sophomore record, Celebrity Therapist, on September 2, 2022, through MNRK Heavy. We are eagerly anticipating this one, especially after hearing their zany new cut, “What is Delicious? Who Swarms?”
The eighth studio album from Antigama, titled Whiteout, was just released on July 15, 2022, via Selfmadegod Records. It’s been about five years since we’ve heard new material from these grindcore nutters.
Beaten to Death, Norway’s melo-grind crackpots, are hitting the studio to record 16 new tracks for a new album. Release details have yet to be divulged.
Apparently, the Santa Cruz-based thrash/death metal quartet A Band of Orcs is coming out with new material? It’s been eons since we’ve heard new material from them.
Segment 02: New(-ish) Tracks
Chat Pile – “Slaughterhouse” (00:17:16)
The debut single off of God’s Country, the first full-length from Oklahoma City’s sludgy noise rockers Chat Pile. It releases July 29, 2022, via The Flenser. Sordid and unkempt. Prepare to send your body to Arby’s by perusing their prior EPs (This Dungeon Earth and Remove Your Skin Please) in anticipation of this monolith.
Ashenspire – “Tragic Heroin” (00:23:10)
The lead single from Hostile Architecture, the sophomore record from Glasgow’s avant-garde black metallers, Ashenspire. A dreary yet cathartic excursion through life under austerity. The full album drops on July 18, 2022, via Aural Music.
Karl Sanders – “The Sun Has Set on the Age of Man” (00:27:04)
A new track from Karl Sanders’ solo ambient endeavor. The track is off his upcoming third record, Saurian Apocalypse, which will be released on July 22, 2022, via Napalm Records. This record will be the conclusion to his Saurian series. His sophomore album, Saurian Exorcisms, can be listened to here.
Osees – “Funeral Solution” (00:30:43)
The opening track to the psych-punk quartet’s latest opus, A Foul Form. Noisy as fuck, and slathered with brittle synth. The full album drops on August 12, 2022.
Amon Amarth – “Get in the Ring” (00:33:06)
I think this one speaks for itself. We mostly picked it so Connor could briefly reflect upon the good ol’ days of growing up with Amon Amarth’s mid-to-late aughts discography.
Heat Deth – “Kruuked” (00:38:42)
Another funky electronic ditty from South Africa’s Cam Lofstrand. This project of his, Heat Deth, is one of many. If this doesn’t suit your style, there are plenty of other projects to explore, like Return to Worm Mountain (acid folk), Black Math (experimental rock), or Taekwondo Sleepover (noise rock).
Segment 03: EPs, Splits, and/or Demos
Botanist / Thief – Split (00:42:08)
This is a fascinating one. One half is nature-soaked post-black metal, seeping with warm, yet corrosive textures. The other is of a dark, experimental electronic strain. Seemingly opposed in style, these two actually come together quite nicely. Check Botanist’s full discography here. Thief’s can be perused here.
Crowning / Naedr – Rayau (Split) (00:53:43)
Four new tracks from Chicago’s emoviolence quintet, Crowning, and three fresh cuts from Singapore’s screamo outfit, Naedr. Crowning’s full discography can be skimmed here; Naedr’s can be viewed here. The split was released by Zegema Beach Records on May 30, 2022.
Biomorphic Engulfment – Calamitous Destruction Through Grotesque Reproduction (00:59:28)
A two-track demo of gurgling, brutal death metal from Bangkok’s Biomorphic Engulfment. Groovy and abhorrent. Last April, they debuted their first full-length record, Incubation in the Parallel Dimension, via Show No Mercy Records.
Segment 04: Weird Bandcamp Picks
The Midnight Ensemble – Midnightdeathfuck (01:04:04)
A surprisingly chill, yet simultaneously unsettling “doom jazz” record (I put it in quotes because I struggle to categorize it). Dirgeful low-end frequencies smudged with stifling drones. This one released back on May 16, 2022.
Low Cunning – Exile of the Shitty Wizard (01:07:35)
The latest chapter chronicling everyone’s least-favorite mage, the Shitty Wizard. I’ll be honest, the title was enough to compel us to talk about it without even hearing the album’s sounds. However, this ended up being an amusing guitar-driven dungeon synth record with hilarious track titles to boot.
Segment 05: Forgotten Recents
Absent in Body – Plague God (01:13:16)
The debut record from Absent in Body, a super-group comprised of members from Neurosis, Amenra, and (ex-)Sepultura. Plodding, pulsating post-metal weighted with dreary ambient and industrial timbres. This came out on March 25, 2022, via Relapse Records.
couldcareless – cryptic clarity (01:20:13)
Batshit mathgrind from somewhere on the east coast (we think). I learned of this project via Wolf Rambatz of the Plague Rages Podcast. Seldom a moment of pause amidst the stampede of breakneck violence. This one came out on April 20, 2022.
Segment 06: Albums of Focus
Doldrum - The Knocking, or the Story of the Sound that Preceded Their Disappearance
Mothman - Cancer Withdrawal
Timestamp in episode: 01:39:01
The sophomore record from Austin’s grinding, metallic hardcore trio, Mothman. Riff-fucking-city. A scorcher of a record. Cancer Withdrawal was released via Dark Trail Records on June 3, 2022.
Altars - Ascetic Reflection
Timestamp in episode: 01:47:36
The long-awaited sophomore album from Adelaide’s repulsive death metal trio, Altars. This release sees Brendan Sloan (of Convulsing) join the troupe on bass and vocals. Ascetic Reflection was released by Everlasting Spew Records on July 8, 2022.
